Step by step

How to do the Barbell Upright Row

  1. Grip a barbell with hands slightly inside shoulder width, overhand. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Hold the bar at thigh level with arms extended. Brace your core and stand tall.
  3. Pull the bar straight up along your torso, leading with elbows flared out to the sides.
  4. Stop when elbows reach roughly shoulder height—bar near upper chest, not under the chin.
  5. Lower under control to the start without swinging your torso.
