Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift

The Romanian Deadlift (Dumbbells) is a hip-hinge exercise for the hamstrings and glutes, with the back working to hold a stable torso. Independent dumbbells travel beside the legs, unlike the single bar used in the barbell variation.

Step by step

How to do the Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand, feet about hip-width apart, palms facing your thighs, and knees softly bent.
  2. Brace your trunk, keep your spine long, and push your hips backward while allowing only a small additional bend in the knees.
  3. Guide the dumbbells close along the front or sides of your legs until you feel a controlled hamstring stretch without rounding your back.
  4. Drive your feet into the floor and bring your hips forward to stand tall, keeping the dumbbells close and your shoulders controlled.
  5. Reset your brace at the top and repeat without leaning backward or turning the movement into a squat.
