Machine Belt Squat

Belt squat loads weight through a belt around your hips instead of your spine. You squat standing on a platform while the load hangs from a cable or lever arm. It builds leg strength with less direct spinal compression than barbell squats.

Step by step

How to do the Machine Belt Squat

  1. Attach the belt around your hips snugly—not your waist—and load the machine with a manageable weight.
  2. Stand on the platform with feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly out. Hold the machine frame or handles lightly for balance if available.
  3. Set your shoulders over mid-foot, brace your core, and unlock knees to begin the descent.
  4. Sit hips down and back while keeping chest up and torso relatively upright until thighs are parallel or as deep as mobility allows.
  5. Drive through mid-foot to stand, squeezing quads and glutes without leaning heavily on the handles.
  6. Step off the platform and remove the belt after finishing your set.

Form cues

  • Belt sits on hips, not stomach
  • Chest up, knees track over toes
  • Sit straight down between your legs
  • Use handles for balance, not to pull yourself up

Common mistakes

  • Wearing the belt too high on the lower back instead of hips
  • Pulling with arms on the handles to finish reps
  • Letting knees collapse inward on the way up
  • Rounding forward at the bottom

Muscles worked

Primary

Quads

Secondary

Glutes and Hamstrings

Safety: Check that the belt and carabiner are secured before loading. Increase weight gradually—momentum from bouncing at the bottom adds stress to knees.
