Machine Glute Kickback
The Glute Kickback (Machine) extends one hip against a dedicated padded lever or footplate. Its rigid machine linkage distinguishes it from a cable kickback using an ankle strap.
- Targets: Glutes
- Equipment: Machine
- Type: Isolation
Step by step
How to do the Machine Glute Kickback
- Adjust the torso support and working pad or footplate so the hip can move freely without twisting the pelvis.
- Brace against the handles or chest pad, plant the support foot, and place the working foot securely against the machine contact point.
- Drive the working leg backward by extending the hip while keeping the knee softly bent and the torso still.
- Pause when the glute is fully shortened without arching the lower back or rotating the hips.
- Return the lever slowly to the start, complete the set, and adjust the setup before changing legs.
Form cues
- Keep pelvis square
- Drive from the hip
- Squeeze the glute
- Control the machine return
Common mistakes
- Using an ankle cable instead of the dedicated machine lever
- Arching the lower back to move the leg farther
- Opening the hip outward during the kickback
- Letting the weight stack or lever drop forward

Safety: Set the pads and range before selecting a heavy load, maintain secure contact with the handles and footplate, and keep clear of the moving lever. Stop for sharp hip, knee, or back pain.
