Smith Machine Calf Raise

Smith machine calf raises load your calves with the bar across your upper back while you stand on a platform inside the Smith path. The guided bar adds resistance beyond bodyweight and keeps your line of travel fixed.

Step by step

How to do the Smith Machine Calf Raise

  1. Set the Smith bar to upper-back height and load the bar. Place a calf block or sturdy platform edge in the Smith footprint.
  2. Step under the bar and position it across your upper traps like a back squat, then unrack by rotating the bar.
  3. Stand with the balls of your feet on the platform edge and heels free to drop below level; feet hip-width, toes forward.
  4. Stand tall with knees straight or slightly bent and release the Smith safety per your gym setup.
  5. Rise onto your toes as high as possible, pausing briefly at the top.
  6. Lower heels below the platform under control, complete your reps, and re-rack the bar safely.

Form cues

  • Bar stays settled on your upper back—don't shrug
  • Full stretch at the bottom, strong squeeze at the top
  • Only ankles move—keep knees from bending into a squat
  • Smooth reps without bouncing off the bottom

Common mistakes

  • Feet flat on the platform instead of on the edge, shortening range
  • Partial reps with minimal heel lift at the top
  • Bending knees deeply and turning it into a leg press
  • Letting the bar drift forward off your traps
