Standing Machine Calf Raise

The standing calf raise machine loads weight through shoulder pads while you stand on a foot platform. It lets you train calves with more resistance than bodyweight and keeps your balance fixed.

  • Targets: Calves

Step by step

How to do the Standing Machine Calf Raise

  1. Load the machine and adjust shoulder pad height so pads rest comfortably on your shoulders.
  2. Step onto the foot platform with balls of feet on the edge and heels free to drop below level.
  3. Stand with knees straight or slightly bent and release the safety if your machine has one.
  4. Rise onto your toes as high as you can, squeezing calves at the top.
  5. Lower heels slowly below the platform level until you feel a stretch.
  6. Repeat for all reps and re-engage safety before stepping off.

Form cues

  • Shoulders stay under the pads—don't shrug
  • Full stretch at bottom, strong squeeze at top
  • Keep knees from bending into a partial squat
  • Smooth reps without bouncing

Common mistakes

  • Feet placed flat on platform instead of on the edge, limiting range
  • Using partial reps with only a tiny heel lift
  • Locking knees aggressively and hyperextending
  • Adding too much weight and dropping into the bottom
