Step by step

How to do the Barbell Shrugs

  1. Grip a barbell with hands shoulder-width apart, overhand or mixed grip. Stand tall with feet hip-width apart.
  2. Let the bar hang at arm's length in front of your thighs. Brace your core and keep arms straight.
  3. Elevate your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as comfortable, keeping arms locked.
  4. Pause briefly at the top without bending your elbows or leaning back.
  5. Lower your shoulders under control back to the start and repeat.
