Dumbbell Step-Up

Step-ups build single-leg strength by driving onto a box or bench while holding dumbbells. They train quads, glutes, and hamstrings in a functional upward movement pattern.

Step by step

How to do the Dumbbell Step-Up

  1. Place a sturdy box or bench in front of you at knee height or slightly lower. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Stand facing the box with feet hip-width apart. Place one foot fully on top of the box, heel down and knee aligned over ankle.
  3. Brace your core. Drive through the heel of the foot on the box to stand up, bringing the trailing foot up beside or onto the box.
  4. Stand tall at the top without hyperextending the knee. Pause briefly for balance if needed.
  5. Step down under control with the same leg that stepped up—lead leg down first, trailing leg follows to the floor.
  6. Complete all reps on one side before switching legs.

Form cues

  • Entire foot on the box, not just toes
  • Drive through the top heel, not pushing off the back foot
  • Chest up, core braced throughout
  • Control the step down—don't jump off

Common mistakes

  • Using momentum from the trailing leg to bounce up
  • Box too high, causing the knee to collapse inward
  • Letting the knee cave inward on the driving leg
  • Stepping down too fast and losing control

Safety: Use a stable, non-slip surface. Start with a lower box height and add weight gradually. Avoid boxes that wobble or tip.
