Machine Hip Abduction
The hip abduction machine trains your outer hips and glute medius by pressing your legs apart against padded levers while seated. It is a controlled way to build hip stability without balancing on one leg.
- Targets: Glutes
- Equipment: Machine
- Type: Isolation
Step by step
How to do the Machine Hip Abduction
- Adjust the seat and pads so the outer pads rest against the outside of your knees or lower thighs when seated.
- Sit upright with your back against the pad, feet on the foot rests, and hands on the handles.
- Select a moderate weight and start with legs together in a comfortable range.
- Press your legs apart against the pads in a smooth arc until you feel your outer hips and glutes engage.
- Return your legs together under control without letting the weight stack slam.
- Complete your set and re-engage any safety pin before standing up.
Form cues
- Sit tall—do not slump forward
- Lead with your knees pressing out, not your feet flaring wildly
- Squeeze outer hips at the widest point
- Control the return; no bouncing in the middle
Common mistakes
- Leaning forward and using momentum to swing the weight
- Shrugging shoulders and lifting off the back pad
- Stopping short with only a small leg spread
- Using weight so heavy that reps become jerky partials
