Machine Iso-Lateral Chest Press
The Iso-Lateral Chest Press (Machine) uses two independently moving plate-loaded arms for a supported horizontal press. Unlike a selectorized chest press with linked handles, each side can travel and be loaded independently.
- Targets: Chest
- Equipment: Machine
- Type: Compound
Step by step
How to do the Machine Iso-Lateral Chest Press
- Adjust the seat so the handles align around mid-chest height and place the back and head firmly against the pads.
- Plant the feet, grip both independent handles, and begin with the elbows slightly behind the torso without overstretching the shoulders.
- Press both lever arms forward and slightly inward while keeping the shoulders down and the wrists stacked over the elbows.
- Stop just before the elbows lock, allowing each side to finish under control without twisting the torso.
- Return both handles slowly until the chest is comfortably stretched and the plates remain controlled.
Form cues
- Keep the back on the pad
- Press independent arms evenly
- Stack wrists over elbows
- Control the lever return
Common mistakes
- Using a linked-handle selectorized press instead of independent arms
- Loading one side differently without intending unilateral work
- Lifting the shoulders or head from the pads
- Letting the plates drop into the bottom position
