Machine Torso Rotation

The Torso Rotation (Machine) trains controlled trunk rotation while the pelvis is stabilized by a seat and pads. Unlike a cable woodchop, the movement follows the machine pivot rather than a diagonal cable path.

Step by step

How to do the Machine Torso Rotation

  1. Adjust the seat, thigh pads, and starting angle so the machine pivot aligns comfortably with the torso.
  2. Sit tall with the pelvis square, secure the legs, and hold the handles or press the upper body against the rotation pad.
  3. Rotate the torso through the machine arc using the abdomen while keeping the hips and knees facing forward.
  4. Pause at a controlled end range without bouncing or forcing farther rotation.
  5. Return slowly to the start, complete the set, and reset the starting position to train the opposite side.

Form cues

  • Lock pelvis to the seat
  • Rotate through the trunk
  • Use a controlled range
  • Return without bouncing

Common mistakes

  • Turning the hips and knees with the torso
  • Using a diagonal cable woodchop setup instead of the rotation machine
  • Forcing an excessive range at the spine
  • Releasing the machine rapidly into the start position

Safety: Begin with a light load and moderate range, follow the machine adjustment instructions, and avoid forcing the spine past a comfortable limit. Stop for sharp back, rib, or hip pain.
